Joker, First Comic-Based Movie To Get BAFTA Best Film/Best Actor Nominations, 11 in Total

The BAFTA nominations are out. And the Best Film nominations are all genre-based, comics, war, crime and thriller, but Joker is the first movie directly based on a comic book character to be nominated for Best Film. Not even the lauded Black Panther came close to that. What Martin Scorsese will say about Joker on the same list as The Irishman (sadly, not about someone who was bitten by a radioactive leprechaun) has yet to be recorded. Of course, if Joker wins that's almost as much a win for Scorsese as it would be for director Todd Phillips. But it has plenty of worthwhile rivals. Me, I'd plump for Parasite from the list… but I also think Bait was robbed, though it pops up later on.

Joker took eleven nominations, including best director, best picture and best actor. With Phoenix winning a Golden Globe for Best Actor, this strengthens the possibility of an Oscar nomination next week. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Irishman were close behind with ten nominations each. 1917 has nine nominations,  JoJo Rabbit had six nominations, Marriage Story, The Two Popes and Little Women had five, while Rocketman, Parasite and For Sama had four each.

The BAFTA film awards will take place on the 2nd of February at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Here's the full nomination list.
