The 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is getting a third adaptation soon. Twice now the book has been worked into a film called The Haunting, in 1963 and again in 1999. But this time, the property is being handled by Mike Flanagan (Occulus), Amblin TV and Paramount TV and has gotten a straight to series 10-episode order from Netflix.
The novel is considered one of the best ghost stories of the 20th century. The 1963 film was a faithful adaptation of the work and received a lot of critical praise while the 1999 version strayed quite a bit from the source material and was widely panned by critics despite the cast that included Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta Jones, Owen Wilson, Bruce Dern and Virgina Madsen.
