New Five Tribes Game From Days Of Wonder Stresses Player Skill

By Christopher Helton

On the heels of the news that Days of Wonder had been acquired by board game company Asmodee, the company has announced the release of Five Tribes, a new skill-driven board game set in "fabled Sultanate of Naqala."

Featuring a new twist on "worker displacement" mechanics from designer Bruno Cathala (designer of Shadows Over Camelot and other games), Days of Wonder describes the new game as "As befitting a Days of Wonder game, the rules are straightforward and easy to learn. But… devising a winning strategy will take a more calculated approach than our standard fare. You need to carefully consider what moves can score you well and put your opponents at a disadvantage. You need to weigh many different pathways to victory, including the summoning of powerful Djinns that may help your cause as you attempt to control this legendary Sultanate." Unlike the more casual Ticket To Ride game, also from Days of Wonder, they are calling Five Tribes a "gamer's game" because, while still easy to play, winning encourages mastery of the game itself and experience with utilizing the rules during play.

Five Tribes Board

Influenced by the long tradition of German-style board games with "meeples," Five Tribes has the twist that game play starts with the meeples already in play and the players must maneuver them around the board and the features that make up the city of Naqala. How, when and where players displace the Five Tribes of Assassins, Elders, Builders, Merchants and Viziers determine who wins or loses in a game.
