If there is one big risk this fall it's Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049. Villeneuve has been kicking down the door to the movie industry for years but the last several have really seen him ride to prominence. Prisoners took Hugh Jackman during his peak superhero persona and turned him into a terrible person back in 2013. Sicario came out of nowhere in 2015 and was so much better than anyone could have ever predicted it was. Last year he finally got some award recognition with Arrival which was a movie that left people staring blankly at walls trying to figure out whether they liked, loved, or even understood what they just saw. He seems to specialize in movies that confound you when you first watch them but get under your skin and stay there for weeks, months, or even years afterwards.

Now he's taking on the reigns of Blade Runner and trying to bring his signature style to one of the most beloved and confusing science fiction movies of all time. There are classes taught on Blade Runner and the idea of trying to step into those shoes would be terrifying for anyone. However, all of the pieces seem to be in the right place for this to be fantastic. Villeneuve likes a slow burn and that is what Blade Runner 2049 is promising. Empire has a new image for the movie and it shows stars Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling facing off. The cinematography in just this one image looks fantastic. The movie is still several months away but we should see the marketing kick into gear soon. This is one we should get hyped about.

Summary: Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

Blade Runner 2049, directed by Denis Villeneuve, stars Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Robin Wright, and Jared Leto. It will be released on October 6, 2017.
