Peter Molyneux Has Quit Talking To The Press After Godus Controversy
Peter Molyneux is an incredibly important game creator for the last 35 years, being the brain behind Dungeon Keeper, Black and White, Populous and Fable. Unfortunately, he is also known quite well for over promising on his games.
Of late, that latter trend reared its head again in a pretty public and messy way. His game Godus was Kickstarted by fans for a grand total of £525,000. That was in December 2012. The game is available at the moment, but is missing key features, like combat, that were promised a long time ago. This has riled up supporters of the campaign to start demanding their money back. Throw in a forgotten competition winner who was promised a 'life-changing prize' who so far has gotten nothing, and you have a pretty complicated situation emerging.
The usually press happy Molyneux has now decided that he is going to fall back into the shadows to continue to develop game's in private. In an interview conducted by Category: Video Games' own Laura Kate for the Guardian, Molyneux gave an emotional interview about his failed promises and his decision to stop talking to press:
I say these ideas so passionately, people think that these are hard and fast promises. I truly believe them when I say them, but as you know, sometimes they don't come to pass. They don't come to pass because they're too technically difficult, they don't come to pass because maybe they don't fit and people see this as being a promise.
My answer to this is this simple. I love working on games, it is my life. I am so honoured to be a part of the games industry, but I understand that people are sick of hearing my voice and hearing my promises. So I'm going to stop doing press and I'm going to stop talking about games completely. And actually I'm only giving you this interview now in answer to this terrible and awful, emotional time over the last three days. I think honestly the only answer to this is for me to completely stop talking to the press.
Molyneux also revealed he had threats sent to him and his family regarding his unfulfilled claims.
People get so frustrated with me, so much so that they've threatened me, they've threatened my family and it just cannot go on, it really can't,
In a way, I feel sorry for Molyneux. He is an enthusiastic man, and I actually see his eagerness and over promises as a passion and charm of the man. At the same time, I understand that entirely changes when a video game is totally funded by consumers. His over promising in this case has certainly been problematic, no longer a cute quirk of the man, but now actually costing gamer's money.
Molyneux currently has every intention of finishing Godus, and I think after this experience, he will. How it comes together is another question though.
