Ryan Reynolds To Star In Detective Pikachu As Titular Pokemon
Detective Pikachu, Legendary's live action Pokemon flick, has found its Pikachu. The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop on the casting, saying that Reynolds has "signed on" to the production. Reynolds joins Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton on the film, which will be directed by Rob Letterman. Though the film is live action, Reynolds' Pikachu will be motion captured.
We haven't quite decided whether a live action pokemon film in the hard boiled crime genre starring Deadpool is an amazing idea or a terrible one, but here's what THR has to say about the plot:
The story is kicked into gear when Smith's character's father is kidnapped, forcing the teen to team up with Pikachu in order to find him. Newton is a sassy journalist who helps them on their quest.
The movie is based on the Japanese Pokemon video game Great Detective Pikachu, though it's apparently dropped the "great" modifier. Then again, perhaps Reynolds can make Detective Pikachu great again.
