Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Is "Very Thrilled" About Her Star Wars Film

Star Wars director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy says she is "very thrilled about the project," and they are "about to create something very special."

Article Summary

  • Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy hints at a 2024 production start for her Star Wars film.
  • Daisy Ridley set to return as Rey in the upcoming Star Wars saga.
  • Star Wars films by Dave Filoni and James Mangold in varying development stages.
  • Obaid-Chinoy aims to shape a unique story in the Star Wars universe as a female director.

Star Wars is beginning its slow return to the big screen after being absent since 2019. A few projects were announced and canceled, probably one of the biggest being Rogue Squadron with Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins. In April 2023, at Star Wars Celebration London, it was announced that three different Star Wars movies from three other directors, all taking place at three different time periods, were all in development. One that immediately grabbed a lot of attention is from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and will feature the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey. Ridley has teased a little about the movie, but Obaid-Chinoy was recently on CNN (via ScreenRant) to say how happy she was to go into the new year exploring this universe and even seemed to hint that maybe production could start this year possibly — it's unclear.

"I'm very thrilled about the project because I feel what we're about to create is something very special," she said. "And we're in 2024 now, and it's about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away."

The other Star Wars films are all in varying levels of development, and everyone else seems to be even more in the pre-planning era than Obaid-Chinoy and her team, so the idea that this one will be next isn't hard to wrap your head around. Dave Filoni is using his film as a final wrap to all of the television shows. So, all seasons need to be released before that can happen. James Mangold just finished Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and is also reportedly working on Swamp Thing for DC Studios. There is still no release date, and you can bet people will speculate about this film for the next couple of years until we get some more solid details. Let's cool it on the sequel or trilogy talk first, though, and let Obaid-Chinoy make her film without expecting to set up two more.
