Stephen Colbert's 4th Of July PSA About Fireworks And Dogs

Stephen Colbert has put together an adorable public service announcement about how dogs react to fireworks. He goes for humor, but the message is clear and very important. Too often people forget about their dogs when it comes to this particular holiday.

A good number of dogs aren't affected by the loud noises, but a good number are. It creates a high level of anxiety in them. Dogs who are normally calm and well behaved can end up escaping their yards or tearing up furniture in an effort to find safety. I have a rescue pitbull named Artemis. She is an amazing, loving dog that is scared of fireworks. I've spent the last six years inside my house on the 4th of July, with her curled up against me and watching 1776 the musical loud enough to drown out the fireworks.

If you have a dog, don't assume they'll be fine. Bring them inside and put a television or radio on to help equalize the noise, and spend time with them. And if you're setting off fireworks, be safe with them, have fun, and remember about the dogs! So try to keep your celebration to decent hours. Lighting fireworks off at 1:30 a.m. doesn't show your patriotism, it shows your selfishness. Our dogs love us unconditionally, but they don't understand what all that sudden noise is, and they get scared. Show them that unconditional love back this evening.
