Why Stephen and Donald Glover Were Thanked in the Credits of Black Panther
While most people still haven't seen Black Panther yet, there are a number of press outlets who have. One of them is Collider, and they got an opportunity to ask director Ryan Coogler about some names they saw in the credits. Apparently, Stephen Glover and Donald Glover were listed as "special thanks". As far as everyone knew, the Glover brothers hadn't worked on Black Panther, so Collider asked Coogler about their names.
"Donald and Stephen actually came in and gave me notes on the draft. They took a day—they were really busy, but they took a day and read the draft right before we started shooting. They had some cool insight."
It sounds like the Glovers came in to give some notes and not much else. This isn't any major script writing or anything, but more trying to get a certain dynamic down right.
"It was more of looking at ways to highlight a few character things, specifically Shuri (Letitia Wright) and how she pokes fun at her brother (T'Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman). Donald's one of the funniest people that I know, so he had some interesting ideas [for that]. And Stephen's crazy talented as well."
Who better to help with dialogue between two siblings than two brothers who write together? In retrospect, they seem like really obvious people to reach out to, and we can expect the moments between T'Challa and Shuri to be even better from those script notes.
Summary: T'Challa, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king.
Black Panther, directed Ryan Coogler, stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, and Martin Freeman. It will be released on February 16th.
