The Batman Part II: Jeffrey Wright Hasn't Seen A Script Yet

American Fiction star Jeffrey Wright says that he hasn't seen a script for The Batman Part II yet, but he has confidence in Matt Reeves that it will be "magical and wonderful."

Article Summary

  • Jeffrey Wright awaits 'The Batman Part II' script, trusting Matt Reeves' vision.
  • Announced in 2022, the sequel's progress remains under wraps, no clear updates.
  • 'The Batman' overcame delays for success; patient approach expected for the sequel.
  • The follow-up set for Oct 3, 2025, with 'The Penguin' series arriving earlier on Max.

While most of the previous era of the DC Universe has been left behind after Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was released, some aspects are continuing to move forward, and one of those projects is The Batman Part II. However, no one has said much about the film since it was announced in April 2022, and the updates have been few and far between. At one point, there were rumors production was supposed to start at the end of last year, but the strikes likely threw a wrench into that. One of the stars of the film, Jeffrey Wright, has been making the rounds for the awards season for the fantastic American Fiction and was asked by Entertainment Tonight if he had seen a script for the film yet. "You've seen as much of a script as I have at this point," Wright said. "I don't want to jump ahead. I just want to go forward with it."

When asked where he would like his character to go in The Batman Part II, Wright was hesitant to say much since he hadn't seen a script yet but made sure to say that he had complete confidence in director Matt Reeves. "Clearly, I'm Lieutenant Gordon at the end of the first film, so we may be moving up in the ranks, I suppose, but I haven't seen anything yet," Wright replied. "I'm being patient, letting [director] Matt Reeves do his thing — which is going to be magical and wonderful — and looking forward to diving back into it when the time comes." Convention season will be here before we know it, and considering that The Batman Part II was announced at CinemaCon and Warner Bros. Discovery tends to have quite the showing at that convention, maybe we'll get some more definitive information about this film in early April.

The Batman Part II Is Taking Its Sweet Time [And That's Good]

The Batman had a bit of a rocky road making its way to the big screen. The film began some level of development when Ben Affleck joined the DC Universe in 2013, and it was reported that he would star, write, produce, and direct the film. However, as time went on, Affleck pulled away from the title, and by the time January 2017 rolled around, Affleck was only set to star in the film, and in February 2017, Matt Reeves was brought on to direct. There were reports about how connected the film would be to the larger DC Universe, but when Affleck entered rehab in August 2018 and by January 2019, it was confirmed that Affleck was no longer starring as Bruce Wayne. In May 2019, Robert Pattinson was cast as Batman in the film, with plenty of backlash from fans that echoed the backlash Affleck received when he was cast back in 2013. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

With a new actor on board, things began to move much faster. While The Batman did get caught up in COVID-related production delays in March 2020, it eventually made it into post-production and was ultimately released on March 4, 2022. The film gained a lot of critical praise, including plenty of people praising Pattinson for his performance [how's that egg on your face?] and made $772 million at the worldwide box office. In April 2022, The Batman Part II was announced, but much like the first film, it appears that no one involved is in the mood to rush this film. It worked with the first film; they might as well do it again for this one. The Batman Part II will be released on October 3, 2025. However, The Penguin spin-off show will be here sooner as it is set to stream on Max later this year.
