The New Strangers Director on Crafting a Complete Trilogy
The director of the upcoming film The Strangers: Chapter 1 is explaining that the new trilogy is something that's never been done before.
We're all for the horror film series The Strangers because it's eerie, uncomfortably realistic when it needs to be, and it offers the genre some iconic, classic masked killers. So basically, it has the timeless components of a slasher franchise. And with the upcoming film (soft relaunch) being announced as the first of a planned trilogy, fans of the franchise have even more to look forward to after the unforgettable entry The Strangers: Prey at Night.
With all that in mind, here's what The Strangers: Chapter 1 director is teasing about the trilogy set to kick off early next year.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 Director Says The New Trilogy "Has Never Been Done Before"
During an interview with Collider, The Strangers: Chapter 1 director Renny Harlin was asked about how the trilogy concept came to fruition. He explained, "[Producer Courtney Solomon] called me and sent me a file of the script, and I could be now romanticizing this a little bit, but my recollection is that you didn't exactly explain to me that it's three movies."
Harlin then elaborates, "[Courtney] just asked me if I knew the original if I was interested, and I said, 'I love the original. What's going on?' And you were kind of like, 'Well, you should read this thing,' and then I opened the file, and it's 280 pages long. I'm like, 'What the heck?' I start reading it, and I can't put it down. It took me, I think, nine hours to read it, and then I talked to him again, and then he explained the whole concept to me, and I said, 'This is genius.' This has never been done before. We really looked at it like one giant epic movie that is going to be made into three chapters, but for us, it was one huge story, and it was really a brainchild of his."
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is scheduled to be released in 2024.
