The Princess: Joey King Credits Everyone Around Her For Her Stunt Work
When it comes to actors doing their own stunts, it has become something of a joke within the industry to look at industry veterans like Tom Cruise, who insist on doing everything even if it seems like they are going to be putting their own lives at risk. That isn't the norm, not even close, and stunt teams are probably one of the most underrated people on a film set. They are doing some insane work that could end with them getting seriously hurt. However, actors do get in on stunts as well, and as more and more action movies get made, it's becoming more and more common for actors to do more and more stunts. The Princess, out on Hulu, is one of those action movies, and star Joe King did do a lot of her own stunts. However, during the virtual press conference, King credited that director Le-Van Kiet and costar Veronica Ngo also really helped her feel like she could do these stunts.
"I think that it's worth saying though that the only reason I felt like I could do these things is that Kiet and Veronica and the entire stunt team as well, they all lifted me up so much," King said of the team behind and in front of the camera for The Princes." No one made me feel like I couldn't do anything. Like, my two stunt doubles, who became great friends of mine, they wanted me to do everything that I could. They wanted to train me to be the best that I could be.
"And so everyone, that's what made me a good student," King continued. "That's what made me able to do all of it, 'cause I had such an amazing support system of people that believed in me. Because I was nervous, I'd never done something like [The Princess] before. So having all these people believe in you and tell you, like, oh, you don't know if you can do it? Well, I know you can. And you're like, oh, well, if you do, then I guess I can. That was really, really helpful."
It's always good to hear that everyone on a crew was lifting up a young actress to take on this kind of stunt and making her feel empowered and comfortable enough to do that. Stunt work is hard, messy, and requires a lot of trust, and it says a lot about the crew of The Princess that King felt so sure she could do her own stunts when posssible.
A Hulu Original, The Princess is an action-packed fight to the death set in a fairy tale world directed by Le-Van Kiet (Furie) and starring Emmy Award® nominee Joey King (The Act, The Kissing Booth) as a skilled and formidable young royal. When a beautiful, strong-willed princess refuses to wed the cruel sociopath to whom she is betrothed, she is kidnapped and locked in a remote tower of her father's castle. With her scorned, vindictive suitor intent on taking her father's throne, the princess must protect her family and save the kingdom. The film also stars Dominic Cooper (Preacher), Olga Kurylenko (Black Widow), and Veronica Ngo (The Old Guard). Directed by Le-Van Kiet (Furie) and written by Ben Lustig & Jake Thornton (Winter's Knight, Final Fantasy), The Princess is produced by Neal H. Moritz (the Fast and Furious franchise), Toby Jaffe (Total Recall), and Derek Kolstad (John Wick), with Joey King and Guy Riedel serving as executive producers. The Princess will stream on July 1, 2022, as a Hulu Original in the U.S., and as a Star Original on Disney+ internationally.
