Thunderbolts Will Resume Filming In March Or April

Thunderbolts star Wyatt Russell has revealed that production will resume in March or April and also talks John Walkers potential arc in the film.

Article Summary

  • Wyatt Russell hints at a March/April start for Thunderbolts' production.
  • Russell discusses John Walker’s complex arc in the upcoming film.
  • Thunderbolts casts includes Stan, Pugh, Harbour, and Yeun, among others.
  • Film delayed to July 25, 2025, due to strikes affecting the production.

The strikes this summer threw a hammer into the production schedules of many movies, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe might have taken one of the bigger hits. It didn't get better for anyone involved when the year continued, and the films and shows that came out in 2023 were generally poorly received. So, while there once wasn't any time for Marvel to try and course-correct, the strikes were a bit of a blessing in disguise because now they have time to sit back and rethink some of the decisions they will be making in the next couple of years. One of the movies that got off the ground for a couple of days at most was Thunderboltsand unlike Deadpool 3, it didn't have to jump right back into production once the strike ended because the release date got moved. So there is a little time. Star Wyatt Russell, who is reprising the role of John Walker, aka US Agent in the film, recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about John's redemption arc and also revealed the timeline for when the film will kick off production again.

"I hope so," Russell said. "There's so much to play with John, and there's so much more to do with John. I'm so lucky to get to work with the kind of talent that I'm going to work with when Thunderbolts starts up in March or April. I don't know when they're starting yet, but Sebastian Stan is a great friend, and you couldn't ask for a better actor. Florence Pugh is one of the best actresses in the world right now, and she's one of my personal favorite actresses in the world. David Harbour. Steven Yeun is one of the better actors in the world right now. You've got all of these people in this movie, and I couldn't feel luckier.

"And speaking of Lodge 49, Jake Schreier is the [Thunderbolts] director, and we worked together on six episodes of Lodge," Russell continued. "So it just feels like we're going for something that has depth and something interesting to theorize about beyond just flying around and doing superhero stuff. That's awesome and cool, and it'll be in there, too, obviously, but I'm hoping to do what we've done with Godzilla. There's a human element to this and those characters. They're hard stories to write and do, but if you work hard enough and you really put your heart and soul into it, you can always make them great. So I'm really looking forward to working hard and having a blast. They're so fun when you let them be fun, and I could not be more excited."

For those unfamiliar with the concept of Thunderbolts, it is very similar to the Suicide Squad over at DC in that it is a group usually made of bad guys or at least morally ambiguous characters. There are quite a few of those floating around in the MCU right now, and the cast is promising to bring back some familiar faces from previous films for some good old-fashioned team dynamics, which we love to see. Marvel fans are a little more on edge these days, but we can hope the reception of shows and movies this year is enough for Marvel and Disney to realize that you can't rely on brand recognition alone and still have to release good movies. Mediocre isn't good enough when you ask people to show up to theaters multiple times a year, and we're all broke as a joke.

Thunderbolts: Summary, Cast List, Release Date

In June of 2022, we learned that a Thunderbolts project was in the works, and the news was confirmed at the conventions later in the year. At the D23 Expo, we learned the lineup for the movie would include Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko). The cast also reportedly includes Harrison Ford as Thaddeus' Thunderbolt' Boss, The Bear breakout star Ayo Edebiri, and The Walking Dead alumni Steven YeunJake Schreier is directing the movie from a script by Eric Pearson. Thunderbolts was initially set to start production this year but had to stop due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes because studios like Disney refuse to give writers and actors livable wages. Due to the production halt, Thunderbolts also had its release date delayed from July 26, 2024, to December 20, 2024, and again to July 25, 2025.
