Tony Todd Recorded Lines For Dormammu In Doctor Strange Before Marvel Went With Benedict Cumberbatch
Tony Todd is nothing if not distinctive. The actor is instantly recognisable to sci-fi and horror fans, especially in his turn as The Candyman, and his voice and presence means he certainly stands out from a crowd.
That's why it is interesting to learn he could have voiced Dormammu in Doctor Strange. As many know now, the motion capture and voice work was done by Benedict Cumberbatch, but it seems he wasn't the only one to try their hand at the character. Speaking to CBR (via ScreenRant)Todd said he went in and did lines for about 6 hours on the character. Sadly, the team decided to go with Cumberbatch instead. He explains:
I have to tell you about one recent disappointment. I almost did Doctor Strange. I went in to do a session to play Dormammu. Benedict [Cumberbatch] had already recorded it but the producers wanted another voice just as an alternative. We did a six-hour session and then two weeks before the movie came out they let me know that they went back to the original choice. I say this just to point out to everybody that you've got to roll and sway with all these punches and waves that come at you. Did I cry? No. I understood. I was disappointed at the value that I lost — people going, 'Dude, are you Dormammu?' [Laughs] But there'll be another Dormammu.
I'd love to see Todd take on a super villain at some point. Like I said, he has a great presence, and could be very foreboding.
