'Doctor Who': Chris Chibnall Promises EPIC Who Years Day Special
Regardless of how fans feel about Series 11 of Doctor Who, the BBC is definitely publicizing the show to the best of their abilities. In an exclusive interview in Doctor Who Magazine, Chris Chibnall previewed the upcoming New Years Day Special, "Resolution."
The Who show runner did his best to both get fans excited for the upcoming special and alleviate the fears of still skeptical viewers. In the interview, Chibnall discussed the need to meet the high expectations of longtime Doctor Who watchers.
"You want it to feel like a treat: a big, thrilling, explosive, moving, cheeky, surprising treat. Basically, you want the Special to be epic. And I promise, it's going to be epic."
Chibnall also gushed about working with "Resolution" director Wayne Yip, who directed Twelfth Doctor episodes "The Lie of the Land" and "Empress of Mars."
"Series producer Nikki Wilson had loved working with Wayne on his episodes in Series 10," says Chris Chibnall. "[Executive producer] Matt Strevens had worked with him on Misfits and loved him. And I'd been especially impressed with Wayne's episode of Class, which kept the characters mostly locked in one room. It's not easy to direct an episode like that and make it continually visually stylish, but he pulled it off with panache.
"I've adored working with him," Chris continues. "He's got great visual flair, imagination and precision. He's a brilliant collaborator with great ideas and he's not afraid of big set-pieces. Which is a good job, because that's what we threw at him."
The official description of"Resolution," which airs on New Year's Day, provides very few details.
As the new year begins, a terrifying evil from across the centuries of Earth's history is stirring. As the Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz return home, will they be able to overcome the threat to planet Earth?
And while Chibnall promises an "epic" episode and Yip explains "it's the mark of a successful sci-fi show to always make sure there's a strong emotional, human element to it," Chibnall, Yip, and the BBC actually revealed very little about what will take place in the episode. There is still no word about whether the Daleks will make an appearance, nor has there been any announcement about special guest stars. In the meantime fans and skeptics alike will have to be content with gleaning what they can from the trailer and Doctor Who Magazine.
The Doctor Who New Years special will air on BBC on January 1st, 2019.
