Elfquest: Wendy & Richard Pini's Comics Series Gets FOX Script Commit

Wendy Pini & Richard Pini's Elfquest has received a script commitment from FOX for a one-hour animated fantasy drama series adaptation.

The epic fantasy world of Wendy Pini & Richard Pini's Elfquest is one step closer to coming to animated life on the small screen. Earlier today, Deadline Hollywood reported exclusively that a one-hour animated drama series adaptation has received a script commitment from FOX. Stemming from Rodney Rothman and Adam Rosenberg's Modern Magic, Susan Hurwitz Arneson (Netflix's The Last Amazon, Netflix's Magic Order) is on board to write, as well as serve as showrunner and executive producer. With Bento Box serving as the studio, Wendy Pini & Richard Pini will executive produce alongside Arneson as well as Rothman & Rosenberg for Modern Magic. "ElfQuest couldn't be in better hands," said Wendy and Richard Pini in a statement when the news was first released. "Our collaborators trust the story. We have the highest regard for their previous achievements, and they have our blessing and input. We know their adaptation of ElfQuest will be a dream come true."

Created in 1978 and published by WaRP Graphics, Marvel Comics, and DC Comics before landing at its current home at Dark Horse Comics in 2013, the fantasy comics series spotlights various elf tribes and a number of other fictional creatures, and their efforts to survive and thrives on an Earth-like planet with two moons. Arneson's animation experience includes six seasons with Comedy Central's South Park, as well as FOX's Bordertown and development work with Sony TV Animation, Fox Animation, MTV, and others. On the feature side, Arneson is currently penning Sony Animation's Hungry Ghosts – which has Charlie Bean (The Lego Ninjago Movie, Lady and the Tramp) attached to direct.

"Wendy and Richard created and sustained one of the most successful independent comics of all time," shared Modern Magic's Rothman. "It's vividly influenced many of our favorite movies and creators. Along with Susan Arneson, we see their achievement as a perfect jumping-off point to explore how post-Spider-Verse animation can take the fantasy genre someplace we haven't seen before. If you're an artist who this speaks to, let us know. We're looking for you."
