Frieren: Beyond Journey's End S01E18: Arrival at The City of Magic

In Frieren: Beyond Journey's End S01E18: "First-Class Mage Exam," we arrive at the City of Magic, Äußerst, for the First-Class Mage exam.

This week's episode of Crunchyroll's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, "First-Class Mage Exam," shows the party has finally made it to the City of Magic, Äußerst, in order to complete the exam to become a First-Class Mage. The episode seems to introduce new characters to become part of a larger ensemble, but how it focuses on their introductions. It was a good episode that hints at new adventures and a fun competition among mages.

While heading to Äußerst, Frieren and Fern discuss the nature of the exam they are about to have and how scarce mages are nowadays, especially First-Class. Frieren asks Fern if she will take the exam since she has already been certified third-class; however, we find out Fern does not feel confident she could pass it and insists Frieren has more mana. Though Frieren confesses mana is not everything and she has lost 11 times to people with less mana than her, most of them being humans like Fern. It was interesting as it does not seem Frieren is interested in taking the exam herself and more pushing Fern to do so.

Somewhere else, there seems to be another mage heading to Äußerst as well for the exam. She is surrounded by a group of thugs that threaten her, but she does not seem a bit scared about it – seeing it more as a challenge. Before things escalate, someone makes an appearance to stop the bandits from engaging with the mage and scare them away. It is Kraft making a reappearance— after the episode, we see his statue (I am so curious about his backstory now). Anyway, he makes it clear to the mage he is not there to save her – but instead, the others, as he had seen another group of people killed nearby and suggests it was her. She introduces herself as Übel before parting each their own way. Kraft recognizes Frieren is heading to the city for the same exam and thinks about meeting her again someday. I am already looking forward to that meet-up as well.

Fern and Frieren register for the exam, and we see them prepare for two months before they commence. While the timing arrives fast, I wish we could get an answer as to what Frieren's pendant means and why it qualified her to sign up for the exams along with Fern. The first step is to team up with two other mages and capture a Stille. Frieren is teamed up with Lawine and Kanne, who have known each other since they were kids and constantly bicker, but work well together. On the other hand, Fern is teamed with Übel. We do not see much of them, but we see Frieren's team has not made any leaps in capturing the bird as the Stille moves faster than the speed of sound. However, after saving Kanne, the girl points out something about the bird's behavior that seems to give Frieren a clue on how to go about capturing it.

Not much happened yet in regards to the First-Class mage exam, but I am so curious to get to know more of the characters and possibly have someone join Frieren's party. I am also very curious to know how Fern's partnership with Übel will go considering Übel has not been introduced as quite a kind soul, so I wonder if this will lead to some conflict among themselves. I cannot wait to see if Fern or Frieren get the certification, or if only one of them, who? Will they be pitted to fight against one another?
