Hulu To Develop Adaptation Of Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man

Universal Studios may be working on an Invisible Man film for their Dark Universe, but Hulu is working on their own series based on the very different novel by Ralph Ellison. Variety is reporting that development has begun on an adaptation of the landmark 1952 novel that tells the story of an unnamed African-American narrator whose color renders him socially invisible. The narrator tells the story of his life from growing up and going to college in the south to eventually living in New York City.

The project is in the very early stages and no script has been written yet. Hulu acquired the rights earlier this year, making a deal with the Ralph and Fanny Ellison Charitable Trust. Hulu seems to be doing well with literary adaptations, recently taking home eight Primetime Emmy awards for their adaptation of the dystopian feminist novel The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. They've also taken two swings with Stephen King including the already debuted miniseries 11.22.63 and the upcoming adaptation of Castle Rock in the works.

Hulu has stated that their original programming strategy is, "To tell intimate character stories against large worlds and large canvases that have really strong, resonant and permanent dramatic underpinnings."
