Legends of Tomorrow Season 4 Episode 7 Review: Killer Dolls and Tragic Backstories

Legends of Tomorrow Season 4 Episode 7 features killer dolls and Constantine's reasons for joining the Legends are all told in a perfect balance of horror, humor, and tragedy.

After seven episodes, we finally have an answer as to what is chasing John Constantine and why he has been so haunted this season. It turns out that it's pretty horrible, which is par for the course for Constantine's life. It's also a fun deep cut for fans of DC Comics who now know exactly what the Legends are up against. We also get to once again see what happens when one of the Legends tries to change history. Apparently, that is a thing that only works for Amaya, which is unfortunate. Matt Ryan puts out his best performance in the role this season as we see the desperation of a man out of options and unable to live with his guilt anymore.

The other story is something straight out of a horror movie and is, ironically, lighter than Constantine's backstory plot. A killer doll is always creepy, but Legends does a great job of blending how creepy it is with how ridiculous it is as well. While it doesn't quite go full blown breaking the fourth wall, Sara is well versed in horror movies and even says something along the lines of "no splitting up. That's Horror Movie 101". The stuff between Mick and Ava is also great because it adds a new layer of depth to Ava as a character.

Finally, the Mona plot line was, well, not the direction anyone thought they'd go and it's certainly an interesting one. Though unfortunately, despite the very weird directions all of this could go, the stuff at the Time Bureau continues to be the least interesting part of this series. While it is fun to break up the other plot lines with such a large group of Legends (and the team usually breaks off into two groups as it is), we really don't need three different plotlines going at once. The Legends breaking off into A and B teams breaks up the episode enough. We really don't need this plot, too.

We have the mid-season finale next week and while this show isn't part of the Elseworlds crossover things are looking pretty crazy
