  • Debbie Downer's first SNL appearance was in 2004 with Lindsay Lohan, Amy Poehler, and other cast favorites.
  • Dratch collaborated with SNL writer Paula Pell to develop the beloved, scene-stealing Debbie Downer sketches.

Sometimes, creating a memorable character is as simple as having a quirk or gimmick that resonates with audiences. This is especially the case when you're doing sketch comedy like Saturday Night Live, and a key to the longevity of a cast member is creating a fan favorite like Rachel Dratch did with the signature character of Debbie Downer, which is as literal as it gets. In the sketches featuring Debbie, Dratch finds herself in everyday scenarios before bringing up something negative off-topic, usually triggered by her scene partners as the camera zooms in on her face and the "sad trombone" plays. While most of the time, she gets into her "Debbie Downer" face, the recurring gag generally elicits a reaction from the audience, and in numerous cases, her castmates end up breaking. Sometimes, it's Dratch herself who struggles to keep her expression. The Grimsburg appeared on her former SNL castmate, Amy Poehler's podcast, Good Hang, and broke down the origins of the character.

Saturday Night Live: Rachel Dratch Reflects on Creating Debbie Downer

Dratch told Poehler about a solo safari she took with other travelers, which included an encounter with a man who planted the seed for Debbie. "Someone said like, 'Where are you from?' and I said, 'New York,'" she recalled. "And then they said like, 'Oh were you there for 9/11?' And it was like 3 years after 9/11. It wasn't like it just happened." The actress and comedian said the question felt like it came out of nowhere and opted to steer the conversation to more lighthearted fare before bringing up the idea with SNL writerPaula Pell the following week. Debbie Downer made her debut in the May 1st, 2004 episode in a sketch that included host Lindsay Lohan, Poehler, Jimmy Fallon, Fred Armisen, Horatio Sanz, and Kenan Thompson in his first season as a featured player (if that gives you any idea how tenured Thompson is on the variety series).

Dratch would reprise her role for six more appearances throughout her SNL run from 1999 to 2006, making cameos in seasons 35, 37, 42, 43, 44, and 45. Her recurring role from 2018 to 2020 featured her playing Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Fox's Grimsburg, which also features the voices of Jon Hamm, Greg Chun, Erinn Hayes, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Alan Tudyk, returns in 2026 for season three.
