Seth Meyers Bringing Munsters Reboot To NBC

Seth Meyers Bringing Munsters Reboot To NBC

Breaking from Variety, Seth Meyers is bringing a reboot of the Ed Haas and Norm Liebmann classic, the Munsters, to NBC.

The reboot is apparently going to be something of a redesign of the classic sitcom that still tries to keep in touch with some of its roots. It's going to be about an odd family attempting to survive and thrive in Brooklyn, which is going through odd transformations thanks to the influx of hispter culture into the area.

Jill Kargman will be the executive producer of the series, and Universal Television as well as Meyers's own Sethmaker Shoemeyers Productions will be the production companies on the series.

No casting has been done yet, and it is likely that this deal was just completed.

The original series ran from 1964-1966. It starred Fred Gwynne as Herman Munster, a father and husband version of Frankenstein's monster. His wife, Lily Munster was played by Yvonne de Carlo, and her design was the classic Bride of Frankenstein look. Al Lewis played the Dracula-esque vampire Grandpa. Butch Patrick played the young werewolf son, Eddie Munster. Beverly Owen, replaced by Pat Priest played their niece, who was just a normal teenage girl.

The Munsters and the Addams Family were two shows with similar themes that ran contrary to one another. Addams Family was a more subversive show about an odd and monstrous family that simply wanted to live their lives while the "normal" outside world gawked at them. The Munsters were played more normally; their appearances were the only odd thing about them. They were an "average" family reacting to the odd ways the world was changing around them.

I personally always found the Munsters more funny and charming, but the Addams Family was by far the more (relatively) challenging television.

There was actually another attempt at reviving the series not too long ago in 2012. Mockingbird Lane was another attempt at recreating the Munsters, this time done by Bryan FullerJerry O'Connell played Herman, Portia di Rossi played Lily, and Eddie Izzard was grandpa. This one was aired on Halloween, but it didn't take off for a number of reasons.

An air has yet to be set as it is in pre-production, but we'll keep you informed as news breaks.
