Agents of SHIELD Season 5: Is the 100th Episode the Beginning of the End?

The upcoming 100th episode of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD has fans both excited and nervous. There has been a lot of talk about Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), the deal he made with Ghost Rider, his death mentioned by future Yo-Yo, and the weird rash on his chest. Could the heart of the MCU be killed… again? The title for the 100th episode is 'The Real Deal', and the synopsis reads:

"Coulson finally reveals the mysterious deal he made with Ghost Rider, which will impact everyone on the S.H.I.E.L.D. team."

TVLine spoke with the writers and Gregg himself to try to get some hints on what we will be seeing this Friday night.

Co-showrunner Jed Whedon talked about putting the special episode together:

Our goal was to create something that would not only be a reward for the fans who have been with us the whole time, but also something that would change the game moving forward — and we think we achieved that. We're pretty proud of the episode.

Jeph Loeb, the 'Kevin Feige' of Marvel TV, said:

It in many ways resets the table, but in many ways it also finishes up some stories that perhaps [viewers] didn't even know we haven't revealed. It's sort of one turnover after another, a great game of cards.

Gregg talked about how there is a resolution that fans perhaps don't even know to expect, and he mentions the secrets his character is hiding:

It's an episode where a lot of things that have been being built toward — some of them in ways you didn't even really realize — really come to a head and pay off in ways that change things going forward. Some of those things have building for seasons, and some have been building since the pilot.

We're going to find out a lot more about what's going on with Coulson and what his secret is. He's not prepared for how upset people are with him for holding on to this secret. Some things will not be the same going forward. But to me, it felt like a very moving and satisfying episode for the longtime fans.

Elizabeth Henstridge talked about why this episode is special thank-you to the fans:

There are so many, just gorgeous Easter eggs. If you're not as familiar with the show, you're still going to enjoy it, but really this is a 'thank you' to the people that have stuck with us all the way to 100. There are some very special moments that we hope the fans are going to really enjoy.

I have to say that from everything people are saying, it feels like they know this is the last season for the series and they want to go out with a bang. I'm a fan and hope that it continues as the show continues to get better and better. The one thing we know for sure is what Natalia Cordova-Buckley said: "The second pod of season 5 is going to be very, very different."

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
