Superman: Nicholas Hoult Wraps Filming; Gunn Shares Hoult's Wrap Gift

Superman writer/director James Gunn confirmed that Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor) has wrapped filming and shared a look at the very cool wrap gift that Hoult gave him.

A week after thanking The City of Cleveland and letting everyone know just how much the team loved and appreciated being welcomed with open arms during filming, writer/director James Gunn shared an important update on how things are going with David Corenswet (Superman/Clark Kent) and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane)-starring Superman. Earlier today, Gunn shared a look at the wrap gift he received from Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor) – who finished his part on the project even as overall filming continues. The gift? A copy of February 1964's Superman (Vol. 1) #167 "The Team of Luthor and Brainiac" (written by Cary Bates & Edmond Hamilton, with art/cover art from Curt Swan and inking work from George Klein) – and it looks like it's a pretty quality copy, at that! Of course, the gift itself already has folks "convinced" that we will be getting a Lex Luthor/Brainiac team-up (hope it's not like the one Alan Moore envisioned – for Lex's sake).

"Thanks to [Nicholas Hoult] for this incredible wrap gift! (No we're not wrapped yet, but Nick is! Can't wait for you to meet Lex.)," Gunn wrote as the caption to his Instagram post, sharing the same image that's in the Threads screencap above – here's a look:

Superman: A Look Back at The Journey So Far…

"Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman's birthday," Gunn wrote as the caption to his post presenting the famous "S" on his Superman's costume, before confirming the change in the film's title. "When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025."

#Cleveland – today we are leaving you after six amazing weeks of shooting," Gunn wrote to kick off the caption to the image gallery he shared in mid-July of the team's experiences filming in the city. "From the moment we first came here on a scout a tad less than a year ago and Terminal Tower was lit up with the colors of Superman, I knew you were a special place. I would walk down your streets and someone would stop me and tell me how grateful they were we were shooting in their city – not once, not twice, but dozens of times. The wonderful background actors on the film were always so fun and funny and they clapped after takes, something that reminded us Hollywood cynics why we make movies in the first place."

Gunn continued, "The pride you feel in being where Jerry and Joe first created Superman was invigorating. You exemplify his spirit. But just as much it's the pride you have in your community, your hometown, your radio stations and restaurants and gathering places that touched me. Every city would be so lucky to have people that loved their city as much as you. You simply couldn't have been more wonderful, kind, or accommodating to me and our performers and crew. The Announcement…

Here's a look back at Gunn's tweet from March 2023 making the announcement that he would be writing and directing Superman: Legacy, followed by the full, heartfelt text of the message he shared while confirming what's been rumbling around social media since the previous week:

"Yes, I'm directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, 'Dude, it's Dad's birthday.' I hadn't realized," Gunn wrote in the opening to his series of tweets announcing the news. "I lost my Dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn't understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film, and I wouldn't be making this movie now without him. It has been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago – I initially said no because I didn't have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved. Then a bit less than a year ago, I saw a way in, in many ways, centering around Superman's heritage – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes."
