The Daily Show "Needs a Host"; Stewart Return "Surprise" to Oliver

Last Week Tonight host John Oliver on Jon Stewart returning to The Daily Show and his suggestions on who should be the permanent host.

As the bulk of the entertainment world is still taking in the news of the return of the prodigal son of The Daily Show host Jon Stewart, the consensus has been one of excitement, including perhaps its most successful former correspondent and occasional guest host, now HBO's Last Week Tonight host John Oliver. While Stewart's return is more for the behind-the-scenes role, he'll share hosting duties on the weekday nightly series as its permanent Monday host, with the Comedy Central series continuing its guest host format Tuesdays to Fridays. Oliver opened his thoughts about Stewart's return.

John Oliver Calls Jon Stewart the "Michael Jordan" of The Daily Show, Offers Permanent Host Suggestions

"I mean, that's… that is a surprise," Oliver told NBC's The Today Show adding "Jordan's back," referencing the Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan. "That's a show that needs a host. [Jon] certainly is a very, very good one. So yeah, it'll be exciting to see what he does. I do think after 2025; they should appoint a permanent host. I would have hired Roy Wood, or Amber Ruffin is very good, but it's going to be very exciting to see Jon again in an election year."

The Comedy Central series has been in no hurry to declare a true successor since Stewart's original successor Trevor Noah left in December 2022 and has since adopted the guest host format inviting a variety of personalities, including Leslie Jones, Sarah Silverman, and Chelsea Handler. Since leaving The Daily Show in 2015, Stewart remained active as executive producer in other shows hosted by alum like The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He would return to host a similar topical talk series in The Problem with Jon Stewart for AppleTV+ which ran from 2021-2023 before creative differences led to the show's cancelation. In addition to the three Emmys won for The Daily Show, Oliver won 15 more for his HBO series Last Week Tonight, which returns on February 18th. Meanwhile, enjoy their latest promotion taunting Disney with their public domain "Steamboat Willie Mickey."
