The Gifted 2×02 Review: People Have Doubts in 'unMoored'
The Gifted continues its expedition into its second season by slowing down to set up the motivations and seed some doubt in our main players.
Summary: Thunderbird contacts a mutant lawyer who recruited him to the Underground years ago, hoping she can help him find the Inner Circle. Lauren and Andy have a shared dream, which distracts Andy from his training and prompts Reeva to consider cutting her losses with him, which, in turn, makes Andy second-guess his separation from his sister. Meanwhile, Reed must keep a huge secret from the group and Jace picks up the mutants' trail again.
After an eventful opening to the second season The Gifted has decided that it's time to pump the breaks and take some time to establish some character motivations. While that means this is not the most interesting episode but it does tease for some interesting things on the horizon. We to see characters like Andy start to show some doubts whether or not when he's in the right place after he shares a dream with Lauren. The fact that we see this doubt come out is important because Andy is a kid who made a rash decision. We also get to see just how far Reeva is willing to go to accomplish her goals.
The best seed of doubt we see actually comes in the form of Esme. We see her questioning the extremes that Reeva is willing to go. It's refreshing since the first season seemed to show that the Stepford Cuckoos were more like one person than three people. It's an interesting dynamic and one that the show will hopefully explore in full.
The show is beginning to do that things where a lot of problems could be solved if people took a few minutes to talk to each other. However, much like the reason people don't go to the police in movies, it makes the show more interesting to have these conflicts. The fact that Caitlin and Reed are fracturing under the weight of Andy leaving and Lauren is taking on a lot of the weight. This is common in families where the adults are fighting.
Marcos and Lorna still haven't shared a scene together but you are really rooting for their relationship. While John and Clarice continue to be adorable together we know it isn't going to last. They are also keeping things from each other and nothing good comes from that.
The Gifted promises to reunite some characters next week and we're going to get another chance to see what Reeva can do. Two episodes in and this show is, thus far, avoiding the sophomore slump.
