The Great North Season 3 Ep. 5 Review: Wooden Hunk Of Lone Moose

FOX's The Great North brings on the hunks as Lone Moose and the Tobin family search for a sexy boat captain to compete against other nearby towns in a float contest. Wolf (Will Forte) and Honeybee (Dulce Sloan) attempt to help out finding the captain for their float but end up stuck with not as many options as they hoped for. Some minor spoilers may be ahead, so consider this your fair warning before reading any further…

The Great North reminded me that one of Lone Moose's council members is a bald eagle named Toby, who has his own plaque at the table. I'm reminded again of how much I wish to live in a town with an animal on the city council. The Tobin family gets chosen for their boat to become an elaborate float in order to compete against other towns. Wolf, in his sexually fluid nature, realizes that each time the town has won in the past included a really attractive captain. It was pretty hilarious how quickly he and Honeybee jumped at the opportunity to hold "Hunk Auditions" for selecting a boat captain.

The way Archie (Adam Godley) talks about the wood he uses for carving is poetic and insanely funny all at the same time. Including Tobin's having a viewing of the film Mannequin is amazing, although having it be Mannequin Two: On The Move would have been funnier. While the jokes in this episode of The Great North had some impact occasionally, the main thing keeping things afloat was the plot. Other than that, it felt like going through waves of interest in what was happening on screen. It feels like this happens every so often with this series. It happens, but it can feel very off-putting when that happens after a few episodes that feel more in sync with the series.

The Great North episode "Woodfellas Adventure" ended up having some great heartfelt moments about relationships, embracing the odd town you're in, and how much a wood carving can mean to a man. With a few dull moments sprinkled throughout, it became an episode that felt off in the end but slightly satisfying. It's like eating really delicious pasta but randomly coming across a piece of broccoli that feels out of place.

7.5/10
FOX's The Great North S03E05 "Woodfellas Adventure" had an excellent story set up for the episode and succeeded in many moments thanks to its brand of comedy, but with dull moments sprinkled throughout, it didn't reach the level it could have.
