The Great North Season 3 Episode 10 Review: Skanky Tree Miracles
FOX's The Great North clearly had such a fun time with this holiday episode, and it showed not only in their animation but also in their embrace of absurdity. When a long-lost family friend shows up at Lone Moose's White Elephant gift exchange, Beef (Nick Offerman) is not pleased. Moon (Aparna Nancherla) rescues a reindeer in the "Xmas With The Skanks Adventure" episode. Some minor spoilers may be ahead, so consider this your fair warning before reading any further…
The Great North brought to life a character that I now desperately wish was a piece of merchandise I could buy with Skanky. He's a friend, a dancing Xmas tree, and has concerning locations for his ornaments. This has got to be one of my favorite episodes this year because of the absurdity from this tree alone, plus adorable reindeer babies aren't bad, either. The flashbacks of the Tobin family enjoying this holiday gift that arrived due to convenience and cheapness for Beef was hilarious. The blank stare of Skanky didn't help calm any unease, but that's perfectly fine.
The Great North has done a great job at connecting the family with unique aspects of Lone Moose and how that environment plays into the daily & annual traditions of each Tobin member. I loved that Honeybee (Dulcé Sloan) didn't give in to any pressures to grab Skanky during the gift exchange, plus Wolf (Will Forte) showed he was upset, but he didn't become someone else in that anger towards his wife. It's a low bar to say such things, but then again, the landscape of television and some animation hasn't been a great blueprint for examples of healthy relationships in the past.
Every episode of The Great North includes a typically fantastic ending song for the credits, similar to Bob's Burgers, and the one in this episode will have to be included as one of my all-time favorites. A snowman twerking his giant ass next to Skanky will be etched in my memory for a long time, and oddly, I'm thankful for that. There was some genuine heart in this episode, and Beef's reasoning for getting and wanting to get rid of Skanky made total sense for his character. It showed how much this series cares about continuing to maintain the genuine beliefs and morals of these characters, no matter how absurd or serious the topic may be.
