"The Walking Dead" Star Danai Gurira Signs 2-Year Overall Deal with ABC Studios
While The Walking Dead fans might not know where Michonne is going to end up by the end of the tenth season, her real-life counterpart knows where she's setting up a creative home – at least for two years. ABC Studios announced on Thursday that Danai Gurira (Black Panther, Avengers: Endgame) had signed an overall deal that sees her developing, writing, and producing for the studio across all of its platforms.
"I am thrilled to work with Jonnie and his stellar team at ABC studios. Their commitment to the feminine perspective aligns with my goals as a storyteller. I am excited to amplify unheard voices and bring to light narratives that will tackle universal themes while they simultaneously break barriers and bring new faces, voices and influences to the screen."
– Danai Gurira
Currently serving as showrunner and executive producer on HBO Max's adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's bestselling novel Americanah, Gurira's personal and professional highlights include:
● Being the first African female writer to have a play on Broadway and to bring African women's perspectives to mainstream theater. Her award-winning stage plays include In the Continuum, Eclipsed, The Convert, and Familiar.
● Gurira appeared as General Okoye in Marvel's 2018 film Black Panther, winning a People's Choice Award, an NAACP Image Award, and sharing a SAG Award. She would go on to reprise the role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame – which would go on to become the top-grossing film in cinematic history.
● Holding a Master of Fine Arts from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Gurira is an ambassador for Bono's One campaign, a co-founder of Almasi Arts Alliance, and founder of Love Our Girls. She was also named a Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women in December 2018 – promoting the cause of gender equality and women's rights.
"From Zimbabwe to Wakanda to Broadway, there is no one like Danai Gurira. The scope of her talents and the breadth of her abilities are simply astonishing. We are over the moon that she has chosen to make ABC Studios her exclusive home."
