Watson: CBS Orders Sherlock Holmes Universe Series; Chestnut Starring

CBS has given a greenlight to the Morris Chestnut-starring "Sherlock Holmes" universe series Watson, set for the 2024-2025 television season.

What would life be like for Dr. John Watson (Morris Chestnut) if the fiendish Moriarty was finally able to accomplish his goal of ridding the world of Sherlock Holmes once and for all? That's the question that CBS's Watson is looking to answer, with the project receiving a direct-to-series order for the 2024-2025 broadcasting season. Set a year after the passing of The World's Greatest Detective, Watson resumes his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders – but with Moriarty still alive, it isn't long before Watson's old life begins threatening his new one in some very deadly ways. As for the type of series that viewers can expect, CBS describes Watson as "a medical show with a strong investigative spine, featuring a modern version of one of history's greatest detectives as he turns his attention from solving crimes to solving medical mysteries." Sherlock Holmes-related films & series have a long history of doing well – with CBS's own Jonny Lee Miller & Lucy Liu-starring modern take Elementary running on the network for seven seasons.

"We are thrilled to feature such a beloved character from the world of Sherlock Holmes at the center of this series and have it brought to life by Morris Chestnut in a fresh and unexpected take on the immortal doctor," shared Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, in a statement when the news was first announced. "Craig Sweeny's bold new vision for the complex Dr. Watson deftly interweaves rich character storytelling with edge-of-your-seat medical mysteries." CBS's Watson is produced by CBS Studios, with Craig Sweeny (Elementary, Star Trek: Section 31) penning the pilot as well as serving as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Chestnut, Shäron Moalem MD, PhD, and Aaron Kaplan and Brian Morewitz for Kapital Entertainment. Larry Teng will executive produce and direct the first episode.
