Ryan Penagos On The Fox/Marvel Situation
On the Jasta Show podcast, Marvel's Ryan Penagos, executive editorial director of Marvel's Digital Media Group talked about plenty of things, including the situation between Marvel and Fox right now. When Jamey Jasta asked "Where are the toys for Days Of Future Past?" we probably got the best on-the-record answer to date.
Ryan referenced circumstances of the Marvel bankruptcy from the Sean Howe book, Marvel Comics The Untold Story and how it seemed every day, people would be gathered in a room and three would be fired. And how whatever deals were made to bring the money in were made, including extended licenses in film and TV for X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four and more, including to Fox. Then Marvel were able to reform creatively and develop their own movies and TV shows.
"Now its 2015 we don't have all the pieces to the puzzle in every way that we's want necessarily, so it's tough…. Maybe you don't get Days Of Future Past Wolverine action figure, but there's plenty of other things out there that could get you jazzed."
While saying how much he loved the film, when asked if lack of such toys was because Marvel wanted to concentrate on Guardians Of The Galaxy, "or is it just because it's the Fox property?", Ryan replied, catching himself…
"It's just… I don't have much to do with Fox. I don't have conversations with them. Okay, I'm not supporting that film on my channels any more than the base need."
Though he did point out that Guardians was a much harder sell and needed extra support to break through…
