DC's Convergence – The Return of All-Ages Comics?
DC Comics is currently running its big event, Convergence, forty two-issue series and a nine issue weekly series, featuring a variety of realities pitted against each other in a battle to the death.
Okay, there's not actually much battling, but still. It seems to be setting up the new Earth 2: Society comic more than anything else, as the books revisit comics past and not-present.
But almost as a byproduct of this process, something else seems to have occurred. Every single comic in the Convergence is pretty much All-Ages.
This is basically as bad as it gets. A bit of a beating…
Some bloodless torture…
A gunshot without impact…
Aquaman calling someone a "bottom feeder"…
A love scene with Harley Quinn behind a sofa….
Very vague innuendo about Nightwing…
In fact this is probably the worst it gets, with a Reservoir Hyena…
Even so, Wolverine did a lot worse in the eighties.
But it may have crept up on folk. No rapes, no eviscerations, the language toned back a couple of notches. It can still be edgy in places, but you should be able to give your eight year old any issue of Convergence without too much worry.
And do any forty year old reading the comics miss the sideboobs?
