Star Wars: The Force Awakens Blu-Ray… Is It Worth It?
By now, everyone who is going to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens has most likely seen it. Maybe there are a few exceptions for really busy people… but still, it's been out for months and made a boat load of money. Everyone has given their thoughts on it and the last thing we need over three months later is a re-hashing of the movie.
I got sent a nice Blu-Ray / DVD / Digital HD combo pack to review. So instead of talking about the movie itself, I'll talk about the extras. Now I know that there are some retailer exclusive copies out there with different features. Target has 20 minutes of extra bonus material and Best Buy has a steelbook case. Walmart has a additional collectible trader disc which I am not really sure what that is.
The one I got is the version you can buy off of Amazon and that's the one I'm going to be talking about. It comes with three discs and a digital code. One of the disc is for the DVD version of the film. The second is for the Blu-ray version and the third is for all the extras. That's a good sign when the extras are on their own disc.
It bonus material kicks off with Secrets Of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey — a full-length documentary about the making of the film with behind the scene footage and interviews with the cast and crew. This is a real nice edition for the Star Wars fans that want to see more than just the story. Sometimes how a film is made is as entertaining as the film itself.
From there we get another featurette about the cast coming together for the table read. Then two more featurettes on building BB-8 and crafting the new alien creatures for the film.
Fans of the lightsaber battles get a behind-the-scenes look at the battle between Rey and Kylo Ren in the snow. There are also in-depth videos on John Williams and his music for the film as well as the visual effects done by Industrial Light & Magic.
And of course there are some deleted scenes.
Now back to the original question, is the Blu-Ray worth it? I'd say for most people, yes. It's a very good film and the extras are fun and add to the enjoyment. Plus, you can just loop the scene of Han Solo and Chewbacca boarding the Millennium Falcon again over and over. But for others, this is the first of a trilogy and they may be inclined to hold off for an extended edition or a special pack when all three movies are done. And if you have the patience for that, more power to you. Me, I'm going to go make some pop corn, fire up the big screen and spend a little time with my seven-year-old self while watching the film.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is on sale now and available in many formats as well as digital download.
