Marvel Comics Will Have 20 Retailer Exclusive Covers In November And 10 In December,
Bleeding Cool has been totting up the number of exclusive retailer covers that Marvel Comics has been offering every month. It's generally around five or seven. Once it dropped down to two. In October, they jumped to fourteen. Something was up.
Because in November, Marvel made a massive jump to twenty exclusive retailer covers for the month, evening it out in December with just ten. Still way over the odds.
Retailer exclusive covers are made available to retailers who commit to ordering several thousand copies, with a cover all to themselves. They can be sold as a collectable, used as a calling card or promotion, and they also help the publisher bump up the numbers. It's an expensive way to do so though, and while Marvel will make money on the deal, they'll make less on each sale than from standard sales of the comic. There is also a danger that with more and more exclusive covers being offered, the market will be oversaturated and the demand will disappear. And that oversupply will cannibalise other offerings and reduce the economies of scale that make such offerings possible in the first place.
Here's what they have planned through November.
- CAPTAIN AMERICA #695
- GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #146
- POWER PACK #63
- SPIDER-MAN #234
- DAREDEVIL #595
- MASTER OF KUNG FU #126
