Owners Alan Carroll and Mimi Cruz told Utah Stories that they weren't closing due to lack of profit, but that their lease came up for renewal and going for forty years might be the death of them…
Alan lamented the tax breaks offered in Utah to Big Box and corporate chains with little regard for small, local businesses. There was also fatigue from working with a distributor, Diamond, that has a monopoly in the comic industry. They are the only distributor in the country with no competition. If there is a problem with a shipment or a price increase, the answer seems to be, "What are you going to do about it?"
They have created a mail-order service for their longstanding customers, and for those who want the personal service, have recommended other local stores to them.
But could a lack of reading at all be an issue?
Alan says, "There is a lack of patience and things move too fast. Social Media has shortened attention spans and people don't take the time to read anymore."
Night night, Night Flight…
Bleeding Cool covers the closing – and opening – of comic book stores. We're more likely to discover the former rather than the latter, as the result of an active fanbase, so please let us know when a new store in your neighbourhood is opening – richjohnston@gmail.com
