Super Smash Bros. Champion "ZeRo" Retiring From Competition

When you think of Super Smash Bros. as an esport and the many tournaments held over the world, some very specific names may come to mind. The one that probably shoots to the top, even for casual fans, is Gonzalo "Zero" Barrios. He is to to the game what Tom Brady is to football, in that even if you know nothing about it, you can probably tell people who ZeRo is, including about his trademark scarf. Well, that's all coming to an end as Barrios announced on Twitter yesterday that he is officially retiring from the game, which he took to Twitter to announce.

Barrios has bowed out before citing burnout and fatigue as the reasoning, but in a lengthy statement to his fans spread out over three screenshots, he appears to be walking away for good as he claims to have lost passion for the game that made him a worldwide success to begin with. There is one little loophole that isn't really spoken about here, and that is that he hasn't sworn off the game entirely. And that's a big deal because it means you may see him down the road playing livestreams and entering friendly tournaments with celebs. Because, let's be honest for a second, if Nintendo plopped down a check for him to play an exhibition match or two at E3, do you really think he's going to say no? Also, when it comes to games and competition in general, consider the fact that Bobby Fisher, one of the best chess players of all time, quit the game twice and came back twice just to prove he was still the best. No matter what kind of competitor you are, even if you hate the game, that doesn't mean you're not good at it anymore.

He may be gone from tournament play, but never say never…
