8 Comics Available For Marvel Retailer Exclusive Variants in March
Every month, Marvel offers retailers the chance to commission exclusive covers for certain titles — as long as they order thousands of copies. It's an effective, if expensive way for both parties to a) get some promotion and create collectables for the market, and b) up their orders. Begun by Dreamwave back in the day, it was popularised by IDW and now Marvel Comics does it more than anyone else with anywhere between five and 10 titles a month.
In recent months, Marvel Comics has been upping the amount of retailer variant covers they offer. Twelve for October, eight for November, twelve for December, twelve for January, but just six for February.
But it's still very unclear how many of these actually get taken up. Take December's twelve offerings.
Superior Spider-Man #1 had a couple of pickups from Comic Mint and Frankie's Comics.
But I can't find anything for Fantastic Four #5, Hulk: Best Defense #1, Doctor Strange: Best Defense #1, Defenders: Best Defense #1, Killmonger #1, Winter Soldier #1, Fantastic Four Wedding Special #1, X-Force #1 or Seasons Beatings #1. Anyone see any?
And Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1 didn't get listed but Scorpion Comics grabbed a couple anyway.
Here are the eight available titles:
- AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #17 (Order by 2/1)
- COSMIC GHOST RIDER DESTROYS MARVEL HISTORY #1 (Order by 1/25)
- MEET THE SKRULLS #1 (Order by 1/25)
- STAR WARS: VADER – DARK VISIONS #1 (Order by 1/25)
- AGE OF CONAN: BELIT, QUEEN OF THE BLACK COAST #1 (Order by 2/1)
- MAGNIFICENT MS. MARVEL #1 (Order by 2/1)
- MARVEL'S SPIDER-MAN: CITY AT WAR #1 (Order by 2/8)
- SPIDER-MAN: LIFE STORY #1 (Order by 2/8)
Tell me if anyone actually takes any of these up…
