Warren Ellis on How He Got Involved in Netflix India's Heaven's Forest and, Yes, Castlevania Season 3 For 2020

We looked at Warren Ellis' teasing of his new Netflix series Heaven's Forest in his newsletter last week, announced officially this week.

Netflix has ordered eight episodes of Heaven's Forest, a Ramayana-inspired epic animated action drama series from Castlevania creator Warren Ellis, executive producers Adi Shankar and Kevin Kolde, and Powerhouse Animation (Castlevania, Seis Manos, Gods & Heroes). Written by Ellis, Heaven's Forest is set in an Indo-futuristic world, with storyline and characters inspired by the Indian mythology of the Ramayana. Ellis executive produces with Shankar and Kolde. Powerhouse Animation will produce as the animation studio."I am delighted to be partnering again with Netflix, my Castlevania comrades, and the Indian creative community, to create this surreal, mythic narrative filled with life and heart," said Ellis.

…I think I can say that Adi Shankar came with Kevin Kolde to me to ask me to create the kind of treatment of the material that Adi and his friends all wanted to see as teenagers in India. Netflix International and Netflix India came on board to get it done. I've been working with an Indian consultant who specialises in the underlying material. And it will obviously be made with an Indian cast. Now I have to run before the Netflix snipers get me (THEY'RE REAL) (WE'RE NOT JOKING ABOUT THOSE)So, yes, PROJECT KATRA was HEAVEN'S FOREST all along, we're already a year into development because television takes A Long Time.And, FAQ: yes, CASTLEVANIA season 3 is still coming out in 2020. Jesus, you guys. We'll give you a date after the last episode is locked and after Netflix decide where it fits in their schedule. We're part of a very big machine here.

For those keeping up, I'm sole writer and co-producer on two tv shows at Netflix now, and consulting on this other thing in person for two days a week for seven weeks, and writing BATMAN'S GRAVE, and developing a couple of other things, with three tv pitch documents to write and a couple of comics things I want to develop up and a book idea knocking at the door. And a house to clear for Xmas. So we're kind of testing the limits of the bloated 51-year-old body over the next seven weeks. Stay tuned to see if I nearly die again.
