"Empyre" Misspelling Will Be Explained in the Story… Probably When Someone Dies in Empyre #4
Folks, I want to take a moment here to tell you why ace reported David Pierce is my personal favorite Bleeding Cool con contributor. On Friday, as Pierce was standing in line at the X-Men creator signing at C2E2, I suggested he ask Jonathan Hickman how many dicks Wolverine has. And I'll be goddamned if he didn't ask him exactly that. And when Hickman refused to give an answer, he even got a quote out of Wolverine and X-Force writer Benjamin Percy. Folks, this is the kind of comics journalism the industry needs.
Today, Pierce was covering Marvel's impromptu Empyre panel, and for the Q&A session, I suggested he ask the panel how mad they were at the intern who misspelled "Empire," which nobody caught before it was too late, forcing Marvel to just go with it. And Pierce delivered… again! Trooper! King! Right here, right now, I want to put David Pierce out there for your consideration for next year's Comics Journalism Eisner Award.
In any case, Pierce asked the question, and Marvel responded that the "Pyre" in Empyre will be explained in a future issue of the comic. What does that mean? Well, just take a look at the newly revealed solicit for Empyre #4…
EMPYRE #4
Written by Al Ewing and Dan Slott with art by Valerio Schiti and a cover by Jim CheungTensions mount as the action heats up! As the attack on Wakanda intensifies, the heroes find themselves under attack from their enemies — and their allies! In a war where nobody can be fully trusted, betrayal cuts deep — as the alien invasion claims its first casualty! In this issue: the shock ending you never expected! You'll want to frame it for your wall, True Believer!
So the "Pyre," presumably, stands for funeral pyre, which of course, when we're not ballbusting, was obvious. And yes, it's also obvious that someone gonna die because it's a super-mega-crossover event, and these things all follow the same basic formula. But now we know when it will happen. So the only question is: who?
Place your bets in the comments, folks.
