Arcadia #1 Provides Us With An Unsettling Look Into A Possible Future
BOOM! Studios has been bringing new creators to the table for a long time now, and they've done it again with writer, Alex Paknadel and artist, Eric Scott Pfeiffer. Their new book Arcadia follows the plotline that 99% of humankind is wiped out by a pandemic. Out of those people, four billion are saved by being digitized at the brink of death and uploaded to a cloud called Arcadia. But when Arcadia begins to deplete energy resources, which the real world (aka "The Meat") survives on, we have to question how long "The Meat" will be able to help. After reading the first issue, I have to say that I'm pretty captivated.
Arcadia transports you to a new world, one that is actually very unsettling. It has a dystopian feel to it, and some of the plot elements reminded me of dystopian books that I've read in the past. This is something that I think a lot of creators are tempted to tackle; the idea of what happens when humankind can no longer survive the way we are used to. Alex Paknadel writes a compelling script that is chock full of detail. I had to re-read a few parts of the comic because it's a lot to digest in one issue. Eric Scott Pfeiffer's style has an edgy feel to it. The way he illustrates the characters shows just how rough they've had it. We get a bit of back story to see how things evolved into the current state the characters are in, but I hope that there's more in future issues. I found the cast of characters to be interesting, but I felt that it was more of a plot driven issue at this point. Perhaps that will change.
Arcadia is said to be reminiscent of Game of Thrones, The Matrix, and Astro City, so if you're interested in any of those titles, I would recommend picking this one up.
