Bleeding Cool Bestseller List – August 6th, 2017 – "New Gods Are Finally Getting The Spotlight They Deserve"

This is the Top 10 Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, as compiled by a number of comic stores from their sales on Wednesday and Thursday. It measures what are known as the "Wednesday Warriors", those who can't wait to the weekend to get this week's comics. We salute you, and the keenness you bring to your passion.

The first Generations comic gets battered by the competition, but at least Star Wars and X-Men keep Marvel in the top 10. And New Gods did probably a lot better than folk were expecting. But nothing comes close to the Bat…

"For the first week of the month, it sure felt like there were not a lot of new books to come out. Between the Big Two, there were only 27 new releases. 11 of the 13 DC books made it into the Top Twenty with 7 of our Top Ten consisting of new DC books. The second print of Batman/Elmer Fudd was #7 in our Top Ten which should be more of a surprise, except people have been asking about it since we sold out of the first print the week it was released. Darth Vader was the only Marvel book to make it into our Top Ten though it did manage to make it to #3. X-Men Gold, Spider-Man/Deadpool, Avengers, and Generations Hulks were all in the Top Twenty, but closer to the end than the middle. More people want to read about Bane doing… something than two Hulks teaming up and being strongest there is. It might have something to do with the $5 price tag that all of these Generations titles are going to have. On the indie side of things, Walking Dead made it to #6 in our Top Ten. The next indie book unfortunately didn't pop up until the very bottom of the list with Galaktikon at #19 and Saga from a week ago at #20.

The surprise of the week was definitely the New Gods Special which, even as a $5 book, beat out Walking Dead (as well as almost everything else). The New Gods have never been huge sellers, but with the focus on Kirby and what would've been his 100th birthday coming up, it seems like the New Gods are finally getting the spotlight they deserve."

"Generations did very well in preorder but just okay on the shelf, probably due to the overwhelming number of people who took advantage of our offer on all ten Generations titles. Batman and Walking Dead still reigned supreme. We additionally have a shared exclusive cover for the volume 1 paperback of God Country which sold particularly well for us and is only available at a select few North Carolina stores. And then for the surprise of the week, both online and in store, Grumpy Cat and Garfield sold like the blazes."

"Image ruled our bestseller list this week with 6 titles in our top 10, including Walking Dead, which took the top spot, and last week's Saga, which sold well enough to make it onto our list for the second time. Fantagraphics also made a rare appearance in our bestsellers this week with the Hernandez brothers' eternally beloved Love & Rockets."

"Slow. Very slow week for being summer. Nothing exciting to report."

"Alas, Marvel's Generations got off to a VERY soft start in our store, selling only about 20% as many copies as our first-place title, Batman–and that meant that it only came in at fourteenth in our store's Wednesday sales list. In fact, Darth Vader was the only Marvel title to break our store's Top Ten. DC took eight of ten spots, with Dead of Winter creeping in at tenth place."

"We recently came in to a collection that had a lot of mid 90s "treasure". While most of it is destined for the dollar bin, it did have a full run of first print Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. Combine a low print run with a devoted fanbase and you have a hot book on your hands."

"While we didn't sell it, we have a copy of Amazing Spider-man #1 which we have been using for an photo op for our customers this weekend. The book is for sale at $3,500 but we thought it would be cool to let our customers have a chance to say they held one."

"Strong interest in pre-Byrne Superman family titles and, for some reason, an increased interest in 1970s and 1980s Fantastic Four."
