Cammy's Covers – Fairest To Hypernaturals
Cameron Hatheway writes for Bleeding Cool;
Fairest #8 by Adam Hughes
First and foremost, I had to edit the ARROW banner from the top, because it just ruins the image had I included it. Why do you hate beautiful covers, DC? It's completely insulting to the artist to try and draw attention away from this beautiful damsel we see before us. Judging by the excess of hair, I believe it's safe to assume the pretty young thing in question is Rapunzel, modeling for The Emperor's New Clothing line. I love the shine on the hair, making it appear that she's glowing, and a wonderful contrast with her skin pigmentation. Very gorgeous cover, with Adam Hughes once again showing why he's a master at illustrating women.
Before Watchmen: Rorschach #2 (Variant) by Jock
I wasn't impressed with the main cover, but this variant cover by Jock is fucking awesome! It's like Edvard Munch's The Scream for comic books, because you can really see the horror and intensity flowing through the cover like some sort of twisted nightmare. At first I thought it looked a little like Sienkiewicz, but upon closer inspection it's definitely that gritty style that Jock's best known for. How amazing would that be to see Jock on interior art as well? A man can dream.
HACK/SLASH #18 by Matt Merhoff
This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down. The lighting is what rules supreme here, with the precise shadowing and pitch black background making the rest of the image pop. The lens flare from the flashlight looks completely natural, and it's just spooky seeing the darkness slowly engulfing the two of them. Then looking at the little things like the reflection of light in their eyes and wrinkles in their attire, Merhoff completely blew me away. Maybe the girls stumbled upon Jock's Rorschach cover in the dark, and weren't expecting it. Or maybe they came across the Spanish Jesus fresco restoration painting. Well done regardless, Mr. Merhoff.
The Hypernaturals #4 (Cover E) by Bill Sienkiewicz
Now this is definitely Sienkiewicz. KNEEL BEFORE THIS SIENKIEWICZ! What more can I say? The water coloring is fabulous, and I love the texture surrounding the characters as a whole. Even if it's only a retailer incentive cover or something like that, Sienkiewicz still gives it his all and makes it look easy. The lack of text and titles works well, and definitely makes it more pleasing to the eye. Christmas is coming up, so if someone wanted to buy me the original art and frame it, that'd be greeeat.
