Fables #124 by Joao Ruas

I must say, Sir Bufkin looks rather dashing on this cover. His face shows years of battle, while his greatness radiates behind him like the most epic halo imaginable. Who would have thought that this little blue flying monkey would one day be one of the most well respected knights in all the land? Ruas continues to dazzle us with his unique style, blending both colors and design into the perfect covers that we see here on a regular basis. My only complaint is we don't get more art on the bottom, unless this was meant to be a recruiting poster of sorts. Whatever it is, it's definitely beautiful, and gets the job done.

Daredevil #21 by Paolo Rivera

The battle with Coyote continues! I'm just loving the fact that Rivera keeps incorporating the blood veins in one form or another with these covers. For this cover in particular, interweaving the veins throughout the coyote skull is both creepy and visually stunning at the same time. Everything is closing in on Matt as he tries desperately to escape this unnatural trap of teeth and blood. If I was in the same situation, I'd probably belt out a line like "Just checked my watch and the time is tooth-hurty!"

Hellblazer #298 by Simon Bisley

I didn't realize the truth campaign is targeting comics now! This has to be their most powerful ad yet! All kidding aside, I absolutely adore the texture of the skull and bones here; gritty, unpleasant, eerie. Speaking of 'eerie,' that John Constantine mask is a little unsettling as well, huh? Don't get me wrong, I'd totally wear one, but it looks difficult to breathe in if there's a cigarette blocking the mouth hole. Awesome cover, I need to go hunt down a Biz lighter now (and I don't even smoke!).

Avengers Arena #2 by Chris Bachalo & Tim Townsend

The kids-battling-each-other-to-the-death homage covers continue this week with the 1954 classic Lord of the Flies by William Golding. I'd almost completely forgotten about that book! It was definitely a favorite of mine in middle school, and I'm feeling bad for Piggy again just thinking about it. Isn't that book due for another film adaptation? Strike while the iron is hot, Hollywood! Anyway, very nice tip of the hat to an iconic book cover by both Bachalo and Townsend. I'm assuming The Hunger Games cover isn't too far behind? Oh, and like Leif Kendall's article the other day pointed out, the Marvel banners are ugly as sin, so I cropped it out here for your sake.

The Unwritten #44 by Yuko Shimizu

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down. With today marking the end of the world and this being my last covers article ever, what better cover to end my run with than this one from Yuko Shimizu? I'm just in awe of the Harpie with the golden red locks, as they just explode off the black and gray background. And the attention to detail in everything from the feathers to the sky is just so incredibly mind-blowing, for Shimizu really outdid herself this time. I've just been made aware of her art book, and that's definitely on the top of my Christmas list! Oh wait, nevermind; Christmas has been cancelled by the Mayans. Thanks A LOT, Mayans! Bunch of sadist savages.
