Charge: An All Superheroes Must Die Comic With Preview

Mark Poulton write for Bleeding Cool:

The hit indie film, ALL SUPERHEROES MUST DIE, gets its own comic book prequel. Charge, the leader of a newly formed superhero team, discovers his friends' powers date back to the dawn of time and have been on display during some of the most infamous moments in history.

A couple of years ago, I discovered the film, ALL SUPERHEROES MUST DIE. I had rented it from Netflix and it sat by my DVD player for at least a week before I finally got around to watching it. Being a comic book writer, I was obviously a huge comic book and superhero fan, but around the time of viewing it, I had a pretty sour opinion of the industry, comics in general, and wasn't in a hurry to watch a superhero movie. A few months earlier I had a dream gig that out of nowhere was gone. I've had series cancelled before and projects fall through. Losing a job comes with the territory of working in comics, but when you are told you did nothing wrong and you're only being fired to send someone else a message it makes you feel pretty worthless. Needless to say, I wasn't my normal happy-go-lucky self for a while.

But then, as fate would have it, the guy who was once named the 7th Most Overrated Writer In Comics finally got around to watching a movie made by a man who had been described as the love child of Uwe Boll and Megan Fox. It was a match made in heaven. After watching ALL SUPEHEROES MUST DIE, I found myself wondering what would happen to the main character, Charge, bleeding out from his confrontation with Rickshaw in the film's final battle, as he hobbled out of a city rigged to explode. I needed to know more.

For the first time in a while, my creative energies were working. I did a search on the film's writer, director, and star, Jason Trost, and found a Facebook page. I reached out to him to let him know how much I enjoyed his movie and if he had ever thought about making comic books about them. I thought he had only scratched the surface on these characters. Jason loved the idea of doing comics based on the universe he had created, but had no idea where to start. I quickly offered my services and we set out to write a prequel comic book that would not only explore the origins of the characters from the film, but the origin of the mysterious powers they had stripped from them in the beginning of the movie too. Jason brought in artist, Gavin Smith, who had done some artwork for him in the past. Gavin is a Joe Kubert School grad and just an amazing talent. Just like that we had a team.

One of the things I really admire about Jason is his DIY spirit. It reminds me of many of my indie comic making friends. We pour our money, time, and passion into projects we are not guaranteed to make a profit on. We do it because we love to create.  After months of hard work, Jason, Gavin, and I now have a completed comic book.

We currently have a Kickstarter going on and I'm not going to lie. It's not off to a great start. It could use some help. Whether you back it or not, I appreciate you taking the time to take a look at it. It's a project that means a lot to me. Now, I won't go as far as saying ALL SUPERHEROES MUST DIE restored my love of comics. It would have eventually come back. I mean comics are too good to resist. But it did give me a kick in the butt at a time when I was down and needed something. For that, the movie and our comic will always hold a special place in my heart.

One last thing… being a huge fan of 90s' comics, I've added an incentive for this weekend. If we can reach one third of our goal by the end of this Sunday, I will upgrade the comic to a foil embossed cover. I can't be the only one who likes a good gimmick cover.
