Months after the killings at the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris, as the editorial team of cartoonists, writers and editors met, the publisher is experiencing new problems.
The cartoon magazine received a huge increase in prominence as a result, with sales rising from tens of thousands to millions, before settling in the hundreds of thousands,
Liberation reports that Charlie Hebdo journalist Zineb El Rhazoui was called in for disciplinary meeting ahead of dismissal last Friday, though when asked for comment, the company's lawyer said they they were not going to fire her, but she has been suspended.
El Rhazoui was one of fifteen contributions who wrote a letter, pressing for a greater share in profits and donations made to the newspaper with current contributors as well as the families if the dead, and to establish a trust for the paper to ensure it's independence and security in the future. Ownership is currently split between the parents of Charb, the cartoonist Riss and the remainder by the CFO Eric Portheault.
But she's also been under greater threats for her work, as the author of the Charlie Hebdo comic The Life Of Mohammed, drawn and edited by the murdered cartoonist Charb , and as a result has drawn a greater spotlight.
Talking to Le Monde, she expressed confusion and her shock that staff receiving threats receive little support from management.
Another cartoonist, Luz, who will be publishing this week a comic called Catharsisabout the attacks has stated that, in the light of El Rhazoui's situation, and increasing pressure all round. says that he is leaving the magazine – even the profession.
