Comic Creators In The Nineties, Morrison, Ennis, Milligan And Many More
Jackie Estrada is very much the heart and soul of San Diego Comic Con.
Jackie Estrada is very much the heart and soul of comic book conventions for decades. And thankfully she had her camera with her.
Following up her book Comic Book People: Photographs from the 1970s and 1980s, she is running a Kickstarter to help fund its sequel, covering the nineties, Comic Book People 2: Photographs from the 1990s
Which means cute Brits being dragged wide eyed across the pond, loud Image boys waving their wodge, media-savvy self publishers hogging the camera and lorryfuls of money backing up and pouring into the industry. Before suddenly leaving it again, all documented in photographs. But also noting the presence and legacy of creators through that decade such as Frank Frazetta, Carmine Infantino, Gene Colan, Al Williamson, Sheldon Moldoff, Dick Sprang and Nick Cardy as well as the newer faces of Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Garth Ennis, Jeff Smith, Terry Moore, Colleen Doran, David Lapham and Paul Pope.
The high-quality hardcover coffeetable book will feature some 600 candid photos taken at comic conventions in the 1990s, along with commentary and anecdotes about each person. The book will be 176 pages, mostly with black-and-white images but including a 16-page color section. Estrada's goal is to raise $23,000 to cover the costs of design, production, and printing of 2,000 copies, along with shipping, distribution, and backer rewards.
Here are photos of Garth Ennis, Grant Morrison and Peter Milligan that Jackie has shared with Bleeding Cool… and many more besides.
And more to come… I'm suddenly getting flashbacks to my first San Diego in the nineties where because Fantagraphics were boycotting the Eisner Awards despite buying a table, me and a few friends took it – and I ended up sitting next to Will Eisner, talking about Chris Ware.
Okay, I'm buying a copy. Join me.
