Coming Up For Air – Nightsmoke Volume Two

Scott Drummond writes for Bleeding Cool:

Have you ever made a mistake you wish you could take back? One misstep, a single bad decision that would hurt those you love and haunt you the rest of your life?

Perhaps not, but now you know how David feels at the beginning of NIGHTSMOKE Volume Two: Up for Air. After accidentally causing a lab accident that took his father's life, he's wracked with guilt, and on top of that, he's wanted by the police!

Or, at least, his alter ego Nightsmoke is. You see, the lab accident also gave him the incredible ability to shift his molecular density and change his body in smoke, a trick he learned in a timely manner to avoid a barrage of bullets while trying to keep his identity a secret.

Now, in Up for Air, David looks to his father's former lab partner, Dr. Meldrick Luent, for help. But it turns out that the doctor may not have David's best interests at heart.

Now that you know what my book is about, let me introduce myself! I'm Scott Drummond, creator of NIGHTSMOKE. I started this project as a webcomic five years ago and have been working on it during my nights and weekends ever since. I do all the writing, penciling, inking, coloring, lettering… basically everything except for printing and binding!

I love this book. After a few starts and stops with other projects, I wanted to take full control and create a fun, iconic, teen-superhero story like the ones I read growing up, but modernized a bit for a new generation. This is the kind of story I wanted to read when I was 12: something that looked like a Saturday morning cartoon, had a lot of action, and even sparked a little romance.

But I didn't want to just do a standard superpower like super strength or invincibility. David's ability should be based in science and chemistry, and required our hero to use his brains instead of just brute strength. Also, his newfound powers needed to reflect how being a loner in high school actually felt, like how the whole world could just pass right through you without noticing.

And so the idea for NIGHTSMOKE was born! Ever since, I've been pushing my writing and artistic abilities to the brink and trying to make the best books I can. I published the first volume through Kickstarter and it went great, and now I've come back to Kickstarter to make the second book even better.

You'll be able to get copies of the books, awesome 11×17" prints, and original art through the project page. There's even a reward level where you can star in Up for Air's exclusive epilogue. Plus, the book will now feature NIGHTSMOKE pinups from incredible comic artists like Chris Grine, Buster Moody, Paul Southworth, Jordan Kroeger, Steve Daniels, and Vince Medellin, with more on the way if we pass our goal.

And as an added bonus, if you back at the $15 reward level or higher, I'll throw in a free 4×6" print (seen below) just for reading this article! Just add CODE: BLEEDINGCOOL to the messages section when you pledge, and it'll be added to your order!

The Kickstarter campaign ends on June 18th at 7:00PM. You can get your copy of NIGHTSMOKE Volume Two: Up for Air and the other awesome rewards by clicking this link. Thanks much, and I appreciate your support!
