Corinna Bechko Talks Aliens / Vampirella

Corinna Bechko talks about the upcoming Aliens / Vampirella #1 published by Dynamite and Dark Horse. Art for the project is being done by Javier Garcia-Miranda

AV2BYRON BREWER: Corinna, you have handled many franchises in your career, most famously Planet of the Apes. How does it feel to venture into the Aliens franchise? Are you a fan?

CORINNA S. BECHKO: I am very much a fan, especially of the first two films. In fact, Alien is on my list of all-time favorite movies.

BB: Similarly, crossing Dynamite's venerable Vampirella over into the Aliens reality must be a bit challenging. I see the meeting happens on Mars?

CSB: Yes, that's right, Vampirella is getting the chance to visit Mars! And while it might seem like the two franchises wouldn't mesh at first glance, the more you think about it the more it makes sense. It's always fun when two monsters meet, and in this case there's a lot of ground to explore in the contrast between them.

BB: Give us your take on Vampirella.

CSB: I like that Vampirella is smart, capable, and a little bit world-weary. She's seen a lot of weird things in her long life, she knows who she is and really owns that, and she doesn't care if anyone else approves.

BB: Can you tell us a little of the storyline, non-spoilery?

CSB: The story is set in the near future, just after humans have begun to explore space and have started to colonize Mars. They've created a permanent base in a prime spot on the Red Planet, but during construction they find that they are not the first species to build in there. It's a mystery that only Vampirella can solve, but when she arrives she awakens something capable of frightening even a vampire.

AV1BB: How has it been working with artist Javier Garcia-Miranda?

CSB: It's really terrific to collaborate with Javier! He brings so much energy to the story and his Xenomorphs are things of beauty. I love how he portrays Vampirella too. I feel really lucky that we've been able to work together on this project, and I can't wait for people to be able to see it!

BB: Fans of POTA found your take very much in keeping with the films. Will Alien fans discover that with this crossover?

CSB: I certainly hope so! When I work on a property like this I try to keep the mood and feeling of the original in mind and be as true to that as possible. Of course this is a little different because Vampirella brings a bit of a different attitude along with her, but I think it's one that works well with the world of Alien.
