For more than a year leading up to the United States presidential election, Captain America writer Nick Spencer has dedicated all his free time, every waking moment, day or night, rain or shine, even when he should be sleeping, or working, to tweeting about Hillary Clinton. Nick Spencer lived and breathed tweeting about Hillary Clinton. When Clinton lost in a shocking upset, it had to be a massive blow for him. He'd dedicated the last year and a half to getting Hillary Clinton elected by tweeting about it nonstop, and it had all been for nothing. It must have been exhausting.
Luckily, Spencer has recovered nicely. With the election over, it was time for Spencer to return to tweeting about comics and stuff. The political tweeting was fun while it lasted, but now it was over. Back to business. Time to move on. And so, Spencer did.
Yes, Nick Spencer, despite the crushing defeat of his campaign and feelings of uncertainty for the future of the country, managed to pull himself together and move forward. His followers, surely, while sad for their hero's loss, were also glad that the onslaught was over and Spencer would go back to tweeting about beloved books like Captain America, The Fix, and Morning Glories.
It was a breath of fresh air. Spencer had tweeted about nothing for politics for so long leading up to the election, it seemed that it was all he would ever talk about. It's not that we don't sympathize with his viewpoints. We do. It's just that it was beginning to get, how can we put this, just a little bit mind you, a tiny little bit like a broken record. But now, at last, we've got back the Spencer we remember, the lovable writer of entertaining comic books, ready to interact with his fanbase and make some freaking comics. Yay!
It's true. We have to admit to being concerned that Nick Spencer wouldn't be able to pull out of the political tweet cycle. We were very concerned. He was in deep, but this… wait a minute, holy crap, is he actually tweeting about comics?!
Malfunction! Malfunction! Shut down! Reboot all systems!
As you can see, things are all back to normal. And with that, there's just more thing we'd like to say.
When we reported in the past on Nick Spencer's obsessive political tweeting, we truly believed that the joke would end with us congratulating him on his hard-fought victory. That it ended so differently came as a complete shock to us, and to be honest we felt kind of bad about it. Would this loss break Nick Spencer? Would he just tweet bitterly about politics until the end of time? After the world ends from Donald Trump-inspired nuclear destruction, with the population decimated, human civilization wiped out, and bloodthirsty mutants roaming the streets, terrorizing survivors, would it still be Nick Spencer living in a makeshift bunker in the sewers underneath New York city, surviving off cockroach meat and scratching 144 character messages about what the Democrats needed to do to win the next election into the walls with his fingernails? We hoped not. We just wanted Nick Spencer to be okay. And we couldn't be happier to learn that he's doing just fine, and certainly not having some kind of ongoing nervous breakdown.
MIDNIGHT… the cycle begins anew.
