DC Comics Introduces Trans Women To Wonder Woman's Paradise Island

This week, DC Comics launched the new series Nubia And The Amazons, by Vita Ayala, Stephanie Williams, and Alitha Martinez. It features classic DC Comics character Nubia, the new Queen of Themysceria, Paradise Island, in the absence of Wonder Woman.  It depicted The Well Of Souls from which Themyscyria welcomes new sisters as citizens of Paradise Island, souls of women who died from violence in Man's World, reincarnated as Amazons. Some wondered if there were suggestions that they may include trans women among the reincarnated.

Stephanie Williams answered that question on Twitter earlier today, saying "If you've read Nubia & the Amazons #1. The answer to your burning question is yes. There are trans Amazons. One of the newest Amazons is a Black trans woman. As much as it is important for The Nubia & the Amazons miniseries to reintroduce Nubia and establish her definitive role in the DCU, it is also important to make clear that Themyscira is a place for ALL women. As much as it is important for The Nubia & the Amazons miniseries to reintroduce Nubia and establish her definitive role in the DCU, it is also important to make clear that Themyscira is a place for ALL women. Bia will have a role on Themyscira beyond just existing – she isn't set dressing, she isn't a box to tick, she is a fully fledged character that is important to her community. Just as Black trans women are important to us in real life." As for her name, Stephanie Williams added "Bia name was inspired by the Titan goddess of the same name who represents power and energy."

Vita Ayala added "We didn't want to make An Announcement because we wanted to introduce the character in an organic way, but it is not a secret! We are glad people picked up on it, but if y'all hadn't we would have made sure to say it so it wasn't hand-waveable subtext! This was written, drawn, colored, lettered, and published with the full support of our team. This project is incredibly special to us, and we are grateful to be involved in it!"

Nubia And The Amazons #1 is in comic book stores now. Nubia And The Amazons #2 will be published by DC Comics on the 16th of November.
