Donny Cates and Jim Lee Together, For The First Time, For Torpedo Comics – And a New Way to Fund a Comic Shop?
Donny Cates and Jim Lee will be attending a special signing event at Torpedo Comics OC, Orange County, California in a couple of weeks. Two such high profile signings in one store is a rarity, and Lee and Cates have never signed together before. Torpedo is using it to help push their VIP service, in which customers pay a premium price to get special access to such events.
Standard VIP costs customers $200 a year, which gets them 3 free signatures for every guest at the store, 10% off back issues and second priority access (limited to 300).
But that's just for cheapskates. Gold VIP costs customers $500 a year, which gets them 5 free signatures for every guest at the store, 15% off back issues and front of the queue (limited to 25).
Lots of comic book stores are looking at different ways to fund their business operations with a challenge to bricks'n'mortar retailers across the sector. A VIP subscription service may be a way to offer that. Will other stores look to something similar?
Jim Lee and Donny Cates will be signing at Torpedo Comics OC on Friday. January 24th from 5-9pm.
